HAITI NEEDS HELP
District HELP HAITI Initiative

Natural disasters can occur in any place and at any time and in a variety of forms. It staggers the imagination to see the devastation wrought in poverty-stricken Haiti by two enormous reent disasters: an earthquake in 2010 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016. It needs a lot of help.

Rotarian David Brady has taken a leadership role in District 6330’s Help Haiti initiative. He’s been with Rotary for over 25 years, is a Past President of the London Rotary Club and is a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow. Observes David, “There’s a ripple effect in helping others.”

The District is working with a small Rotary club in Aquin, Haiti which has little money of its own, and in cooperation with the Haitian Resource Development Foundation and the Kellogg Foundation. David outlined several projects in which District clubs could choose to participate. Aquin needs to replace fishing gear and equipment lost to floods so that it can get back to work. David says that replacement boats will be less likely to be swept to sea.

Hundreds of beehives lost in the storm have be replaced and provision made for teaching people how to make a living at beekeeping. A mango processing facility where local people can learn how to dry and package mangos can create year-round availability of fruit and employment. There’s a similar project related to coffee production. The hurricane damaged buildings, grounds and equipment of the Computer School. New buildings will be made of sturdier cinder block. The Aquin Hospital was severely damaged by an electrical fire in its operating room. Medical equipment is needed.

So far, five District clubs have come forward to take part. International Services Director Pat Martyn indicated that the Board would be taking a close look at how the St. Thomas Rotary Club could help Haiti.

APRIL A GO GO….Club President Nancy welcomed Maggie Horn, wife of Bill, and prospective member Edie Gallant as guests today and welcomed back Dave Rock and Gerry Janssen….Next week (April 10), a tour has been laid on at the STEAM Centre (50 Wellington St. in St. Thomas) from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Lunch will be back at the Wayside. There is no meeting on April 17 (Easter Monday). April 24 is a Club Assembly.

The St. Thomas Home Show, held Friday, March 31 to Sunday April 2 at the St. Thomas Timken Community Centre, proved to be a very good weekend indeed for the St. Thomas Interact Club, its advisor Trudy Kanellis, and its Rotarian helpers. In thanking Rotarians for their support, Trudy noted that 325 Pony Poopin’ Bingo tickets had been sold on the weekend. A total of 669 have been sold so far; 4000 is the goal. Funds raised are in aid of the Children’s Hospital of London. The big event takes place May 6 at From Away Farms, 43 Sunset Drive in St. Thomas….President Nancy announced that her nomination of Trudy for a Volunteer award from the City of St. Thomas had been successful. Trudy will receive recognition at the City’s Honours and Awards Presentation evening April 20. Congratulations, Trudy! Very well deserved.

The H20 4 Every! Water event is set for Saturday, April 22 at the Timken Centre from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. President Nancy has pledge sheets (which she can email) for the walk which takes place on the Centre’s indoor track. Participants need only make one lap of the track (if unable to do more). Proceeds will be directed to Pikangikum, a First Nations community in Northwestern Ontario. The Anglican Church of Canada and the Rotary Club of Toronto are also involved in raising funds for this project….DG Diane Chantler, in her capacity as member of the Railway City Rotary Club, advises that the Club’s Fish Fry is set for May 6. Contact Trudy or President Nancy if you would like to buy tickets…. The Rotary Music Festival Keynotes Concert takes place this Friday, April 7 at 7 p.m. at the Salvation Army. Admission is by donation.

The Rotary Leadership Institute seminar Parts 1, II and III takes place Saturday, May 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at King’s College in London. To pre-register, contact PDG Al Hardy at al@allanhardy.ca by April 28. The District will subsidize the registration of two new members from each club. It had previously been announced that our club would pay the $75 registration fee for any member wishing to attend. Contact President Nancy if you would like to attend so that payment arrangements can be made….Nancy also reported on the Reading Buddies program at the Northside Hub. The program is off to a slow start but she and Trish did have an opportunity to read to some children last week, and are determined to stick with it….Bill Horn was winner of the 50/50 draw. Fine Master Paul Blower highlighted six of the “20 things to know about Rotary in Canada” found in the Rotary Canada supplement to the April 2017 edition of The Rotarian magazine. The 2018 Rotary International Convention is in Toronto. The Sarnia Rotary Club is arranging a bus for those who would like to attend the 2017 Convention in Atlanta.

One can’t do anything alone in Haiti. Sharing and cooperation are so deeply woven into the culture that sometimes it’s hard to have a separate thought.
