Happy Gathering of Club at Home of Davey & Gwen Moffatt Today we met at “Menuha,” the beautiful home and bed and breakfast of Davey and Gwen Moffatt on Southdale Road. Members and guests thanked Davey and Gwen as they were toured through the property‟s house and gardens. “Menuha” is set up with three suites. One of the inhouse suites (which are accessed by a separate entrance) is a self-contained bed sitting room and ensuite bath topped off with a lovely kitchen with microwave, fridge and two burner stove. The other bedroom rental includes a full bath and kitchenette outside the bedroom. To round out the set, guests can stay at the completely furnished guest house, located a short walk around the fenced vegetable garden. Marvel at the accoutrements, antique toys and amazing woodwork (tulip wood flooring salvaged from the basement) of the cabin get-away! It is easy to understand why this property is named “Menuha,” a Hebrew word translated as “joyous repose” (thanks to Gerry for the information). Since this meeting was less formal and more of a social event, we dispensed with the national anthem and the toasts. However, President Trish asked us to recite the Four-Way Test, the performance of which reminded us that we seem to need the banner for cueing. There will be no meeting on September 6. Our first regular Wednesday club meeting, on September 13, will be a Club Assembly with Past President Nancy Lovelock in the chair. On September 20, Sandra Westaway will visit us to explain the exciting plans for Inn Out of the Cold and Poverty Action. The proposal for this project, endorsed by several Rotary clubs, won a Community Foundation grant of $10,000. Gerry Janssen will be in the chair. HAPPY FINS- Donations of $5 to The Rotary Foundation – Annual Programs Fund – credited to the donor in celebration of something good in our lives. This practice was started in this club in 1985 to raise funds for polio eradication at the suggestion of Darwen Lowe, a member of the club. Gerry Janssen (1) – For our wonderful hosts; for “Menuha” which is a Hebrew word for „rest‟ and can be translated as „joyous repose‟. Ron Somerville (2) – His brother-in-law survived a coma several years ago and is celebrating his 63rd birthday tomorrow; Ron recently received a birthday gift of a day tour of Trent University in Peterborough where his grandson is in his third year. Jennifer Babcock (2) – Mason passed his swimming lessons with some extra practice time provided by Mom and Dad; back to school soon – ambivalent emotions of thankfulness and sadness. STEAM Centre hosts “STEAM Mission 150” An epic one-day event will be hosted throughout five „mission‟ sites in St. Thomas and Elgin County plus headquarters at the „Big Top Tent‟ on Saturday September 30, 2017. Students ages 12-15 will compete in teams to complete a task at each site.
Volunteers for many shifts are needed from set-up and tear-down to traffic and parking to helping teams. Volunteers get free meal(s) and a T-shirt. Contact Nancy Watts at 226-212-0048.
Guests today included Maggie Horn, wife of Bill; Faye Ferguson, wife of Ken; and Kathy Willson, wife of Ed…. Bill Horn was winner of the 50/50 draw…. Sergeant-at-Arms Ed Willson fined Bill and Maggie Horn $2 each for winning the 50/50 so many times in the past few months.
Gerry Janssen was Fine Master and did a „fine‟ job, bringing us two important pieces of information: the research into the name “Menuha” and reminding us of the Rotarian Code of Conduct which is found on page 8 of the September issue of The Rotarian.
“As a Rotarian, I will: 1. Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life; 2. Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect; 3. Use my professional skills through Rotary to: mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people‟s quality of life in my community and in the world; 4. Avoid behaviour that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians.”
What a great reminder!
