In the photo at left, President Trish Shouldice shows all the jobs that need filling in the Rotary Food Trailer at the Fire Muster scheduled for September 2 and 3 at Pinafore Park. There’s room for your name – in fact, there are several places where it could go, which would delight Trish and help make Trailer operations go that much more smoothly on the two days. Contact Trish if you can lend a hand. Today’s meeting, the last regular Monday meeting of the Club at the Wayside, was followed by a meeting of the Food Trailer Committee. Next week, there is no meeting of the Club on any day.

 

However, on Monday, August 28, we will convene at “Menuha,” the home and bed and breakfast of Davey and Gwen Moffatt on 47376 Southdale Line. The property is located just west of the intersection of Hobson Road and Southdale Line, which is about a kilometer west of the Springwater Conservation Area. There are directions on the Club’s website: www.rotarystthomas.org. You may arrive at “Menuha” any time after 11 a.m. for a walkabout or time to relax. There will be lasagne for dinner at 12:15 p.m. Please bring a salad or dessert to share. Trudy advises that dictionaries for Grade 3 students have been ordered and are expected to arrive by then. There’s no meeting on September 6 but our first regular Wednesday club meeting will take place September 13. That will be a Club Assembly and Club Board Meeting with Past President Nancy Lovelock in the chair. On September 20, Sandra Westaway will be speaking on behalf of Inn Out of the Cold and Poverty Action, with Gerry Janssen chairing the meeting. Tempus fugit!

 

 

Ron Somerville (4) – For the three 80th birthday parties in his honour (one included cake at Rotary and another a parade and fireworks in Port Stanley); to hail the medical benefits of nitric oxide.
Stew Shouldice (2) – For a great boating vacation in Wiarton; he was pleased to see the Wiarton Rotary Club’s food concession located under a pavilion at a local fair.
Gerry Janssen (2) – He was happy to attend the wedding of his best friend’s daughter’s in Niagara on the weekend; he and the missus are off to Ottawa this week to visit with old friends.
Bill Horn (6) – For a very nice trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee; the Aquarium there is worth a visit; for three birthdays; he and Maggie travelled the Bourbon Trail through Kentucky (“fun” says Bill and “very educational” says Maggie.)
Trudy Kanellis (3) – For a great vacation in Greece; it’s her niece’s birthday today; one of her brothers is also having a birthday.

 

Maggie Horn, wife of Bill, was a guest today. It was great to see Maggie and Bill, back after a long vacation, and Trudy from her vacation, and Edie DeLanghe who’s also been away for a few weeks….Bill was Fine Master and recounted a story of what he found in a journey to another part of the continent: the Grande Prairie, Alberta Museum and Heritage Village. On a blackboard in the old schoolhouse was written the Canadian pledge of allegiance:

 

“I pledge allegiance to the Flag,
the emblem of my Country
and to her I pledge
my Love and Loyalty.”

 

Ken Ferguson was winner of the 50/50 draw….The painting on the passage wall from our Rotary tables to the buffet counters is a loose translation by a present-day artist of “The School of Athens” by Raphael who painted the original fresco between 1509 and 1511 in the Vatican. The Wayside work was completed after the 2001 fire and does not include quite so many people as the original. There are however, two new figures: Nick and Trudy Kanellis. Can you spot them?

 

Malcolm Rust forwards this invitation from Violence Against Women, Services Elgin County, an organization that has received the Club’s support on several occasions. VAWSEC will be hosting its first “Safety, Love, & Butterfly Wings” Annual Butterfly Release on Saturday, September 30 at 1:30 p.m. in Pinafore Park.

 

“There are 489 butterflies we would like to release this year - each represents a woman or a children that will come through the doors of Women's Place Elgin's Emergency Shelter in the year ahead and find safety and counsel there. Each butterfly can be sponsored for $30. The proceeds from the annual butterfly release will support the life changing safety, support, and hope available 24 hours a day at Women's Place Elgin's Emergency Shelter.”
