World Polio Day Celebration
The Rotary Club of St. Thomas raised the End Polio Now flag at city hall on Wednesday, October 23. City Council had passed a proclamation declaring October 24, 2024 to be World Polio Day in St. Thomas
Numerous members of the local EMS and Police departments joined members of our Club, the Railway City Rotary Club along with our special guests, DG Katherine Hahn and ADG Jenny Veeke.
Trudy made sure that everyone there went home with a purple pinkie. Barbara shared a brief history of polio.
Katherine spoke to the gathering about the work that has been done to distribute vaccines following the case in Gaza and commended the club on their efforts to support eradication.
Following the ceremony we moved to the Seniors' Centre where we enjoyed a delicious brunch. ADG Jen congratulated the Club on its vitality, despite the small number of members we currently have. DG Katherine and had almost completed all of her official visits. As she has travelled from club to club, the only thing that is consistent at every meeting is the ringing of the bell. However, she did say that we are all really doing the same thing - serving our communities and the world.
Plans are underway for the District Conference and a focus will be on plenary and breakout sessions. She suggested that we might like to present our work with Harvest Hands in conjunction with the Railway City Club.
DG Katherine picked Malcolm's 50/50 tickets and he won a substantially larger amount than usual as we had several guests to bolster our numbers.
