Malcolm spoke of RCST connections to the STEGH hospital:
  1. Furnished the chapel soon after the club was formed
  2. Bert Thacker and Jon Skafel were both hospital CEOs
  3. Ed Willson was Manager of Ambulance Department
  4. In 2020, the club made major donation toward the construction of the North Wing
  5. Both clubs found ways to acknowledge the staff during the COVID pandemic
Malcolm introduced Tina Oliveira, Director of Medicine and Emergency Services. She has been a nurse for 40 years, most recently Emergency Director at London Health Science Centre. She has a keen interest in patients with Mental Health issues as a member of the Coach Steering Committee crisis team at LHSC.

Summary of Tina’s presentation:
All staff are required to “Take not tell”; if you ask for directions, you will be escorted to their destination. Staff make eye contact within 10 feet of visitors.

STEGH has one of the region’s largest number of employees; 230 Doctors, 1039 staff, 175 volunteers. $16 million was raised locally for the North Tower, but the hospital needs to fundraise for equipment. An MRI is one such item remaining to be fundraised. STEGH is a medium sized hospital; it must balance its budget that comes from government Health system funding. The cost to operate for 1 day is $800,000. 20-30 ambulances drop off per day staying only 5-10 minutes per drop off. It’s 179 beds are always at capacity. The Emergency departmentt takes 150-200 people per day. See the vast variety of services provided Hospital Services .
In order to meet the demand for services, management is using:
  1. Evaluation of Skills mix of Staff
  2. Creating a reserve staff unit
  3. Creative scheduling
Learned from COVID:
80 thousand visits, 23,400 admissions, 1staff sick first wave, 220 seventh wave. COVID is hard to predict, staff need to respond very quickly and collaborate. Supply chain and labour shortage issues remain. Masks work. The hospital has an employee wellness program but some staff get burned out. Tina thanked the community for its support of food, gifts, and free parking.

Malcolm introduced Jacqueline Bloom, an experienced ( 20 years health care) charitable sector leader. She has worked with Heart and Stroke Foundation, Spinal Cord Injury Ontario, Cystic Fibrosis Canada, and Friends of the the Moncton Hospital. She joined the STEGH Foundation as Chief Executive Officer. A summary of her presentation:
STEGH is the second busiest in the South West Region, but our community members must be referred out of St Thomas for special consultation and procedures. We are part of a wide collaborative network, so we see people from London coming to St Thomas for emergency services.
We will be fundraising for a new MRI to arrive fall 2023; $1million has been raised leaving $7 million needed from the community in the next 3-5years. Staff are training now. Discussions are underway with Amazon. An extensive renovation of Diagnostic Imaging is wrapped up with the installation of the MRI.
Q&A
Mark- comes from a region that has closed Emergency departments. There is no such talk here. STEGH has one of the shortest Emergency wait times in the province.
A long new term master plan is pending and might involve the creation of a new hospital.
Ron- Will there be a dialysis service? Not enough demand will need to go beyond St Thomas.
Bill- Is there funding from City and County? Yes

Online training needs to be done prior to January 1st before we volunteer at Jackpot City. I have done it and it takes some time to sit through everything but isn't difficult.
