Sue Beringer of the Magic Yarn Project, accompanied by Helen, shared this unique project with us.
Started by an oncology nurse in Alaska, this project exploded on social media. The volunteers create Disney themed wigs for children with cancer or other medical hair loss. To date, 56,000 wigs and hats have been created in 52 different countries.
The local chapter, headed up by Sue, meets twice a month at the Dorchester Arena for workshops to bedazzle the wigs with "hair", and decorations. The wigs are then shipped in boxes along with a card.
Christmas hats are also created and their siblings may also receive a hat.
The local group services London, Waterloo, Scarborough, Hamilton, Ottawa, and Ronald McDonald House.
Supplies include 75 skeins of wool per month, Pure and Simply Soft Yarn. The approximate cost is $25/wig and $5/hat. Crocheters must pass quality control tests and live in a smoke-free and pet-free environment. Wigs must pass 10 quality control checks before being sent out. Disney, while not providing a licence, has strict rules for the wigs and hats including the colours used.
