Returning Students Exuberant, Enthusiastic
All this Youth Services Month, we have been delighted to hear stories of the great deeds and characters of our community’s young people. Fittingly enough, May concludes with reports from students attending the Adventure in Citizenship program in Ottawa (May 1-4) and the Seminar for Tomorrow’s Leaders at Western University (May13-15), who returned with high spirits and new awareness.
Nathaniel Pepper and Sabreena Nemeth-Crouch were two of three students who attended the Seminar for Tomorrow’s Leaders (Nathaniel’s sister, Sarah, was on a school field trip today). Leadership skills were high on the agenda, and games, team building exercises and inspirational speakers were all used to good effect. There was also dodge ball, learning to play the nose-whistle and a dance, and by the time Sunday rolled around, there were many tearful partings of newly made friends. Though there may be opportunities to be both leader and follower in the course of one’s life, Sabreena noted, it is always possible to be the leader of your own life.
Olivia Vaseleniuck was selected by the Club to be one of more than two hundred students from across Canada to participate in the Adventure in Citizenship program, hosted for many years by the Ottawa Rotary Club. She described several highlights of her four-day Adventure with the aid of a colourful PowerPoint presentation. There were visits to the Canadian War Museum, Canada’s Parliament, the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health, and a citizenship ceremony in which several Syrians became new Canadians; provocative speakers like Phil Gurski, author of The threat from within; recognizing Al Qaeda-inspired radicalization and terrorism in the West, and Green Party Leader Elizabeth May on women in politics; a mock election to select a Prime Minister from among their number, and many occasions to develop friendships with fellow Adventurers.

THIS IS WHERE WE CAME IN….President Nancy welcomed guests Assistant Governor Sue Storie (from the London Hyde Park Rotary Club) and Delroy Brown (from the London Rotary Club)….Next week’s meeting is a Club Assembly followed by a Club Board Meeting. On June 13, instead of our regular meeting, we will be having a breakfast meeting with other service clubs at the Wayside from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Price is $10. There is no meeting on June 20; instead we will meet on the evening of Tuesday, June 21 for our annual Volunteer Appreciation Night at the CASO Station….Olivia Vaseleniuck, in time-honoured fashion, drew her own winning 50-50 ticket but Sergeant-At-Arms Ed Willson was quick to fine her $2 for doing so. Fine Master Ken Ferguson levied a loonie fine in exchange for the information that there would be a ceremony in France on June 6 in commemoration of the 72nd anniversary of the D-Day landing in Normandy.
Suzanne Ferguson announced that she now had letters signed by herself that Club members who needed to get police checks could take to either the St. Thomas Police Service or the OPP. Two pieces of identification (not including the Health Card) must be shown at the station.
Conference Chair David Black reminds us that the last day to register for this year’s District Conference in Owen Sound is Saturday, June 4. “Rotary Around the Sound” takes place from June 9 to June 11. HAPPY FINS- Donations of $5 to The Rotary Foundation - Annual Programs Fund - credited to the donor in celebration of something good in our lives. This practice was started in this club in 1985 to raise funds for polio eradication at the suggestion of Darwin Lowe, a member of the club.
