AND BEAR IN MIND….As at last week’s meeting, there were two motions presented to the Club:

 

Moved by Malcolm Rust, seconded by Trish Shouldice, THAT a donation of $150 be made to United For Refugees for their summer barbeques at the Hepburn Parkette.  CARRIED.

 

Moved by Malcolm Rust, seconded by Ed Willson, THAT a donation of $200 be made to the Rotary Satellite Club of London Centennial.  CARRIED.

 

United for Refugees advises that it has been six months since their most recent refugee family has arrived in the community and everything is going well.  The Chair of the Rotary Satellite Club is Ashley Warnock, the daughter of Aylmer Rotarians Barb and Bob Warnock.  Most Club members are younger than 35.   It is expected that it will become independent of its host club, the Rotary Club of London, in two or three years.

 

Rotary Leadership Institute seminars, Parts I, II and III, have been laid on for Saturday, September 24.  The seminars will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at Georgian College, 1450 Eighth Street East in Owen Sound.  The deadline is on or before September 16; contact Al Hardy at al@allanhardy.ca.  The St. Thomas Rotary Club will pay the $75 fee for any of its members who wish to attend.  Contact President Nancy. 

 

From AG Sue Storie:  “We have the honour of hosting Rotary International President Elect (RIPE) Ian Riseley in London on September 26 when he will speak at the Rotary Club of London at the London Convention Centre, starting at 11:45 a.m. We are still working on the name of the person to whom you will confirm your attendance. We would like him to see as many Rotarians as possible.”  From President Nancy: “We are planning to go as a club event and a replacement for our regular meeting.  Details to follow.”

 

Another reminder that the grand opening of the new home for Women’s Place, Elgin’s Emergency Shelter is on Wednesday, September 7, 45 Princess Avenue in St. Thomas.  The Opening Ceremony is at 1 p.m. and the Guided Tour at 2 p.m.   RSVP Liz Brown by August 29 (519-633-0155 or lbrown@vawsec.on.ca).  Women’s Place extends a second invitation: “to give a book that matters to you and pen in its front cover your best wishes for the women and children who will find safety there.  The books will grace the bookshelves built into the fireplace that warms the center of the home and the bookshelf in the window seat of the children’s playroom.”   If you wish to donate a book, please bring it or mail it to their office at 300 Talbot Street, Suite 26, St. Thomas, by August 29.

 

United for Refugees is conducting its last summer fundraising Charity BBQ at the Hepburn Parkette (next to the CIBC) on Talbot Street in St. Thomas from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, August 26….Ron Somerville was winner of the 50/50 draw. President Nancy assumed the role of Fine Master and reported that the water project in Mexico has been completed thanks to Adriana’s organization and industry in arranging the necessary financing in Mexico without the need for any other assistance from the Club.  Well done, Adriana!
