President Barbara opened with O Canada, toast to King/Country and RI and the 4-Way Test
Barbara’s quote from Paul Harris is in line with the theme of today’s speaker; ‘Dreaming is not so bad if we dream good and make the dreams come true”.
Mark introduced Brianne Oswald, a coordinator with corporate sponsors for the Sunshine Foundation (see pic below taken from our Facebook Page). She was working in Corporate Sales and switched to the not-for-profit sector.
This Canadian foundation is based in London. Their focus is to change the lives of children with severe disabilities who are not critically or terminally ill. Their funding comes from corporate sponsors; see the large list of supporters at:
https://www.sunshine.ca/supporters .
They are not supported by the United Way or governments. Prior to COVID, they were chartering planes filled with children to go to Disney World; that plan is now on hold. Children with life-changing dreams are referred by hospitals or physicians. The average cost to fulfill a dream is $10000. The Sunshine Foundation documents long-lasting positive impacts that come to the children they sponsor. Examples of their success can be seen on the website link above. Children 11 to 21 years of age who exemplify confidence and resiliance are chosen from all parts of Canada . 66,000 qualify but 8800 have fulfilled their dreams. Children have become screenwriters, lawyers, judges, software developers, etc.
Trish thanked Brianne.
