Art Sterling joined the St. Thomas-Elgin YMCA in December 2022 as Funding Director.
He provided us with some very interesting statistics regarding the financial support that the Y gives to its members:
  • $269,000 in financial support in 2023 to 35% (900) members
  • $5,366 to send 14 children to Summer Day Camp
  • 44% of members needed financial assistance as of March 2024
The Y's mandate is to provide support, inclusion, and make a healthier community.

In July a new Pool Only pass is being instituted.  Unlike 1987, when males did not wear bathing suits at the Y (Nancy had first hand knowledge of this), all swimmers must now wear swim suits.  This reduced rate pass will allow many more people to take advantage of the only indoor pool in St. Thomas.

The Club presented a cheque for $10,000.00 to the Y for their summer programs including transportation to the Day Camp.

Introduction

President Mark began the meeting with the ringing of the Rotary bell, with toasts to King and Country and Rotary International and a Paul Harris quote. This was followed by a group recitation of the 4-way Test.

Catharine Janssen (Club Member and owner of BRACA Shirts) and Club Member Malcolm Rust

Our club was given an enlightening presentation on Immunology and the Impact of Stress on Your Health by Catharine Janssen, who is also a Certified Holistic Cancer Coach. The presentation has been provided to all club members. Here are some highlights.

The technical term for the study of mind, body and spirit is psychoneuroimmunology.  There is a strong link between our stress levels, therefore our gut health and our immune system.

Here are what are called the "happy hormones" and the things you can do to ensure your body releases MORE of these hormones.

Since more than 70% of our immune system is in the gut, and when we are under stress, we dramatically reduce circulation to our gut, we need to find a way to manage that stress to keep our gut/immune system healthy.  A new chemical (ATF3) has been identified that, when activated by stress, can turn on the onco gene.

So eat healthy and say happy!

Club Announcements

Mark has been approached by Rotary D6330 to have a Visioning session done for our club which will be done over 3-4 hours on a Saturday morning.  The date is still to be confirmed but likely in April.  Mark is checking on possible locations for this event.
The Membership Committee is working on a brochure and the draft has been sent to everyone for comments.
Mark is looking for volunteers for the 75th Anniversary Committee.
Cindy will be taking over for Malcolm on the Speaker Committee.
Cindy suggested a Paint Night as a social event for the club on one of the Monday evening meetings.  She will investigate.

Next meeting is January 8th at 11:00 am.  Lunch first, then meeting.
