President Barbara opened with O Canada, toast to King and country and toast to RI; Mark lead the 4-WayTest.
Dr Ninh Tran was acting Medical Officer of Health and on 21Mar22 became officially the MOH of Southwestern Public Health (Oxford Elgin St Thomas). He comes to us from Hamilton Ontario. He works part-time in a medical practice. See pic below.
Polio
Dr Tran showed us a map of locations of field strain of virus in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The vaccine derived (Oral Polio Virus) OPV is found in Africa, UK and New York state, and mutates/causes symptoms of Polio. The vaccine derived OPV is spread via travel between countries. Type 2 polio is not used in the oral vaccine version now as it is the most common Type to cause vaccine-derived polio.
In Canada, the OPV was stopped in 1995 and the inactivated virus was used in Polio vaccination. Vaccination coverage for 7-17 year old’s is near 95%. 20 million people have been protected from the suffering of Polio, but the vaccine is not a treatment for Polio.
Influenza
We have experienced a low incidence of the Flu in past 2.5 years because the COVID protocols protected us. Australia had a bad Flu season, (their winter season has just ended) so we need to be prepared in Canada this winter. Seniors get either a higher dose of the manipulated virus in their shot or a flu shot that is attenuated (substance added to make it work better).
COVID
Recently we have seen an increase in hospitalization, more variants and mutations. The booster vaccine available to us is Bivalent (more than one Omicron strain). We should get a booster at least as early as every 6 months. Check with Public Health to see availability of vaccination sites. Dr Tran generated more questions than any other recent speakers.
